A Relic from Operation Overlord in 1944Normandy is an ever-popular destination for UK Schools. From William the Conqueror to the D-Day Landings of World War Two, this region of France has played a huge role in British history. In addition to the obvious wealth of historical attractions, the region also boasts 400 miles of magnificent sandy coastline as well as a host of charming towns, villages and fishing ports.

William the Conqueror's Impressive castle at CaenEuroculture is pleased to offer five centres in Lower Normandy. All are situated a short drive along the coast from Caen, the capital of Lower Normandy. This stretch of coastline earned its place in World history in the Spring of 1944 when the Allied Forces put 'Operation Overlord' into action. Driving along this route is itself like a history textbook coming to life as you pass the landing beaches one-by-one: Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah.

Aside from the Beaches themselves, with their memorials and gun emplacements, there are a number of other 'must-see' locations for a school history group visit, most notably the impressive, thought-provoking Memorial de Caen. Other highlights include the Juno Beach Centre, the Pegasus Memorial, the American Museum at Gold Beach as well as the 360° Film Show and D-Day Landing Exhibition at Arromanches. One of many beach memorials in the area

If your school group wishes to broaden the educational perspective beyond D-Day, Normandy's rich culture and heritage offers many other fascinating possibilities. Places of interest such as Bayeux and Deauville, and slightly further afield to the impressive medieval city of Rouen and the World Heritage site of Mont St Michel.
